  • After your pets' dental cleaning, his or her mouth is back to DAY ONE at the start of this cycle.  The bacteria will be back in 3-4 hours!  So, commence a Dental Health regime as soon as possible!

  • To start your pets’ Dental Health regime, decide on 2 or 3 days in the week that you are going to set aside 10 minutes to dedicate to your friend’s oral health.

  • Begin with handling the mouth gently, pull the lips back to expose the teeth on both sides, use lots of praise.  Do this until both you and your pet are comfortable.  Don’t expect success the first time you do this, it may take 3 or 4 times until he/she will allow this.

  • Next, you are going to introduce the toothbrush or rinse.  Put something tasty on the toothbrush ( peanut butter, cheese whiz….).  Remember we want this to be a positive experience.  Don’t expect to brush the whole mouth the first time; baby steps work the best.  Same with rinsing, it may take a few times of partial rinses before you are able to rinse the whole mouth at once.

  • Now you are ready to introduce the toothpaste.  Try to keep your brush at a 45 degree angle to the gum line to effectively remove debris and plaque.  Pay special attention to problem areas such as, the upper premolar and the tooth next to it, the first molar.  If your dog has a moustache be sure to keep it trimmed/ thinned and brush the incisors as often as you can.  The moustache traps debris, food, and the hair even gets trapped in between the teeth, too!

  • Be sure to make this a positive experience.  At the first moment of frustration go back to something your pet will tolerate and end on a positive note.  This leaves a good impression in both your mind and your friend’s.  Remember to use lots of praise while you are brushing or rinsing and finish off with a favorite reward; play time, a walk, attention, preferably not a treat unless it is going to be a benefit to the effort you have made to clean the teeth.  For example, a C.E.T. chew, a MediCal treat or T/d treat would be fine.

  • If you have any questions or just need some encouragement, please call and ask for a Technician.  If you would like a demonstration, make an appointment and we will show you step by step at no charge.  Call WinRose at 254-3150
