Revolution®
is our best recommendation for heartworm prevention.
This
is a topical application that is put on the skin once a month to protect against
heartworm, fleas & mites. Revolution®
also helps kill ticks, but you must start the applications at the beginning of
May
(two extra applications for best results – May 1st & 15th)– Please call one of the team members for details!
Your
dog should be tested for heartworm this spring if s/he was not given the
heartworm prevention last year, or s/he did not receive the preventative
medication each and every month.
Heartworm testing is recommended every year by the drug companies to comply with their guarantee.
At WinRose we
require
heartworm testing every third (3rd) year to ensure the medication
has been 100% effective in preventing heartworm infection.

How
to Switch Your Pet to a New
Diet
A gradual
change is the best course of action, in most cases.
Some pets will change readily to a new diet, without any associated
problems. Others will be reluctant
to accept a new diet while some will develop diarrhea if switched too rapidly.
Cats, in particular, can be “finicky” when it comes to a diet change.
Start by mixing a very small amount of the new food with the old, whether
that be dried or canned. Some cats
are so finicky that even a small amount of a new diet will stop them from
eating. If a cat doesn’t eat for as little as 24 hours, they can develop liver
failure. Therefore, if your
cat won’t eat the new diet, DO NOT continue to try to force them to eat
it Give them back their old
food and call the hospital immediately. We
will try to find a suitable alternative. If
your cat accepts the first mixture, gradually increase the amount of new food in
the mixture over about a 2-week period until they are eating the new diet
completely. If your cat is not a
finicky feline, they can be switched over in a shorter period of time, perhaps
3-4 days.
Dogs are often less selective and will switch easily to a new food. They can be switched over a shorter time, perhaps 4-5 days by mixing half new and half old food for a few days. However, if you feel that your dog may be a little more sensitive to food changes, switch them over more slowly so that they don’t develop diarrhea. Dogs will not starve themselves (other than some tiny toy breeds – see cat information above). If you persevere, they will switch. For moral support for owners, call the WinRose Hot Line at 254-3150 !
