Dr. Nancy McQuade

Dr. McQuade graduated in 1984 from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, following completion of her Bachelor of Science at the University of Manitoba in 1980.  In her “previous life”, Dr. McQuade was a medical laboratory technologist for 10 years.

Dr. McQuade is very proud to have been one of the founding partners of WinRose Animal Hospital and, more recently, Best Friends Animal Hospital in February of 2003.  She is also very proud of her team members at both WinRose and Best Friends and their commitment to the owner-pet-veterinary bond.  Dr. McQuade is especially committed to sharing with our patients’ owners the knowledge that her veterinary team has gathered over their many years in practice.  She recognizes that “knowledge is power” and that knowledgeable owners are better able to provide the best care for their pets.

Since graduating from veterinary school, Dr. McQuade has developed a special interest in birds and exotic pets and has established WinRose as the most advanced exotic medicine practice in Winnipeg.  She loves working with all of her patients, but the exotics provide a special challenge that she has embraced.

Dr. McQuade is a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Humane Society.  The Humane Society has become a passion of Dr. McQuade, “speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves”.  She currently serves as 2nd Vice-President, is a member of the fundraising committee and co-chair’s the Paws In Motion committee with WinRose’s hospital manager, Cheryl Vandal.  Through WinRose’s sister practice Best Friends Animal Hospital, Dr. McQuade also donates her services to Petland’s “Pets for Life” Adoption Centre.

Dr. McQuade has been married to her husband, Brian Macri since 1984.  Because of their busy schedules, their “family” is limited to a geriatric pussy cat, Thunder, and a 3 year old budgie, Tony.

Aside from her career, Dr. McQuade’s activities include traveling, scuba diving and gardening.  She is also a member of Assiniboine 419 Toastmasters Club, where Dr. McQuade hones her “listening, speaking and thinking” skills every Tuesday night – a great asset to everyone who has to listen to her!

Dr. Carolyn Eichkorn

Dr. Carolyn Eichkorn studied Biology for 3 years at the University of Winnipeg and received her B Sc. in 1988. After an eye-opening 8 months in Australia working on a cattle and poultry farm (on an agricultural exchange program), she returned to university and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in April of 1993. She spent 5 years in mixed practice in Steinbach before starting with us at Winrose in August of 1999.

Dr. Eichkorn has special interests in dermatology, surgery, and animal behaviour. Having dealt with a rather rebellious, shoe-eating chocolate labrador of her own, she especially enjoys spending time with new puppy owners working through those ‘baby blues’!

She recently completed an extensive continuing education course on small animal endoscopy and she hopes that this will become a new and interesting aspect of veterinary practice. Thanks to a very special patient ‘Bracken’ for our first ‘sock retrieval project’!

Despite her many ‘adventures’ in large animal practice and numerous fond stories for the memory book, Dr. Eichkorn has found learning about exotics to be equally fascinating. She especially enjoys working with our little rabbit and guinea pig buddies!

On a more personal note, Dr. Eichkorn lives with her 8-year old, crazy chocolate Labrador “Brewster”. As her first ever dog, the whole experience of dog ownership has been both a challenge and an ‘extreme learning curve’! It has given new meaning to the term ‘I speak from experience’!

Dr. Eichkorn looks forward to seeing you and your pets in the very near future.

Dr. Birte Klug

For as long as Dr. Klug can remember, she always dreamt of becoming a veterinarian…and so she did! Dr. Birte Klug graduated from the University of Berlin, Germany in 1995. She then spent 5 years doing research about Lyme disease and can now say that she knows everything about the “the nasty little tick”, the transmitter of the disease.

In October, 2000, she started to practice “real” veterinary medicine and changed to small animal and horse practice. She later worked at the small animal clinic at the Veterinary Medicine School of Hanover, where she developed her interest in dermatology and anaesthesia. Returning to Berlin where she still had her “roots”, she joined a team of 8 veterinarians in a small animal emergency clinic. There she developed her skills in dentistry and orthodontics because “Pets Have Teeth Too”!

About a year ago, her dog, Shirley, joined her small family, which then consisted of her partner, Andreas, a “herd” of gerbils and two snakes. Shirley had been abandoned by her owner, who could not afford a surgery for her broken leg. Dr. Klug repaired her fractured leg and fell in love with this small and timid young dog. She brought Shirley home when Andreas wasn’t there and now he can’t live without her. A few months later, she had a second surgery to remove her hip ball and would not use her leg, but with physiotherapy and strength training, she can now “run like the wind”.

In 1993, Dr. Klug spend two exciting summer months at the veterinary hospital in Dauphin and in 2001 decided that Canada, with its wonderful people and nature, was where she wanted to live. She had to sit through many exams, translation of certificates, and applications, and in January of 2004, visited WinRose Animal Hospital for an interview. The great team, with its strong client relationships and variety of different pets that we care for, impressed her so much that she decided to come back in April to join the team.

Her interests focus on delivering the best care to clients’ pets and sharing with them details about their pet’s problem and its treatment. She also offers language service in German. She spends her time off with Shirley, who loves to play with other dogs or her ball. Dr Klug also likes, In-line skating and traveling to Manitoba’s Provincial Parks are her next favorite hobbies.
