Choosing the Right Pet Sitter  by S. Campbell

Once again the summer months have crawled up on us, and vacation time has started.  The big question that is on everybody's mind is about their pets.  When taking your animals on a trip isn't an option, then how do you decide who to choose to watch over them?  Choosing an option that best suits your needs is not always easy.

Today there are many boarding kennels out there.  Call your local animal hospital and see which kennel they recommend.  It is always important to visit the kennel in advance, ask for a tour, take your pets with you.  It is also important to find out what vaccines are required by the kennel.  Remember that your pet will be in contact with other animals and should be properly protected against disease.  Most importantly, meet the staff, make sure you trust them, as they are ultimately responsible for your pets well being.

If you don't feel comfortable with boarding your pet at a kennel, there is always the option of boarding your pet at a veterinary hospital.  This allows you to be able to leave your pets with people you trust and know.  Medical attention is readily available.  Remember that not all animal hospitals offer a boarding service, so be sure to stop by and find out what they offer.

Finally, there is always the option of having someone look after your pets at home.  This also gives you the advantage of having someone look after your home while you are away.  It is important to find someone who is responsible and reliable.  Always ask for  references, it is important to know what kind of experience your pet sitter has.  Most importantly, your pet sitter should be someone you and your pets' feel comfortable with.  Always have your pet sitter visit your home before you go away and see how he or she interacts with your pets.  Ask questions!  A good pet sitter will be willing and able to answer and questions and concerns that you have, especially if your pet has a medical condition that requires medication.  It is important to have a pet sitter who will understand your pet's needs.  Finding a good pet sitter isn't always easy, call your Veterinary office...they will be able to recommend someone who they know and trust.

A good pet sitter is as important as a good baby-sitter.  Your pet is important and deserves the best care.
